A Second Exhibit at Addison Woolley in June

Portland --May 26, 2010 --For the Love of Peaks: Island Portraits & Stories: A Collection, both an exhibit and a book launching celebration, opens June 12 for a week at the Addison Woolley Gallery in Portland, Maine.

The show will feature black and white photographs of a number of older Peaks Island residents, with accompanying writings; including excerpts from interviews conducted by the show’s creator, Fran Houston, original poetry by her subjects, or their own thoughts about their connection to the island.

The book launching reception will be held Saturday, June 12 from 3 to 7 p.m., with music by Kevin Attra and Ronda Dale until 5.  Exhibit hours will run Sunday through Friday, June 13 – 18, 1:30 - 5 pm.

Inspired by the island’s rich history and conversations with those whom islanders lovingly refer to as old timers; Fran Houston contacted many long time island residents, photographed and interviewed them, and collected their stories.  Her sensitive portraits draw out the essence of individual personalities; the twinkle of an eye, a distant thought, dignity, joy and memory.  She said, “My hope is to capture the heart, history, and humor of those that have resided here, weaving a rich tapestry of which we have been the beneficiaries.”

This project has been made possible in part by a matching grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission through the New Century Community Program.
